Mentors Lead the Way

Overview

Mentoring provides students the opportunity to enhance their academic and professional development through exposure to real-world experience. Business leaders, many of whom are UAlbany School of Business alumni, assist students with their transition into corporate culture by providing a supportive and safe environment. As a result, students enter the corporate arena with a greater sense of confidence.

Students are paired with a well-employed corporate professional currently working in the student's field of study for a yearlong program. Undergrads primarily use the program, though graduate students may also request a mentor.

Mentors provide guidance, perspective, insight and knowledge through regular contact. The mentoring relationship, in turn, provides professionals an opportunity to contribute to the School of Business and the individual student.

Mentors.

•  Present the "big picture" perspective,

•  Advise and support the professional development and growth of students,

•  Share their insight and knowledge about the industry and business in general,

•  Provide effective communication and constructive feedback,

•  Help students define and refine career goals.

Types of Contacts

Mentoring is done through mail, phone, visits to the workplace, lunches, etc. These sessions might be one-on-one discussions on specific topics like managing office politics, balancing personal and professional development, and current trends. Students learn best business practices through participation in a variety of activities, which may include: job shadowing, observing interviews, and attending board meetings, career fairs and business conferences. They may have direct involvement in client and business meetings.

Time Commitment and Responsibilities

The mentor determines the type and frequency of contact, though the School of Business requests mentors to provide a minimum of one meeting or activity per month over one academic year (two semesters). This facilitates a more thorough introduction to the business world, allowing for sharing of more in-depth information.

If you'd prefer a commitment of shorter duration, the School of Business offers Job Shadowing and Externship opportunities. For more information about these, or if you are interested in being a mentor or having a mentor, please contact Deirdre Sweeney at dsweeney@uamail.albany.edu . You may also use our online Mentor and Mentee applications.
