The MS and MS-TP in Taxation

Program Overview:

The one-year M.S. in Taxation (MST) and M.S. in Tax Practice (MS-TP) programs are designed to educate students in the methodology of tax research and to help students develop the ability to analyze and interpret tax law, regulations, cases and related material. Both programs are designed to meet the growing need and demand for tax advisors, consultants, and executives to deal with complex tax considerations involved in virtually every business and financial transaction

Both the MST and MS-TP programs attract students from a variety of backgrounds including CPAs, attorneys, financial advisors, government agents, private industry professionals, and recent college graduates. This challenging program offers courses in state and interstate taxation, corporate taxation, partnership taxation, and estate and gift taxation. The School of Business , in collaboration with Albany Law School , offers students the option of taking a tax law course each semester at Albany Law School to satisfy part of the MST and MS-TP requirements. Recruiters and alumni strongly feel that this exposure to Albany Law School is unique and sets our students apart from students in other tax programs.

The tax program is reviewed by an advisory council composed of experts in the field of taxation including representatives from international accounting firms, industry and the Internal Revenue Service.

 Testimonials from Alumni

"After obtaining my undergraduate degree in accounting at the University at Albany, I stayed to complete my MS in Taxation. It was definitely the right move, for me, and I highly recommend the program. Currently, anyone serious about pursuing an accounting career and/or CPA licensure must obtain a qualifying graduate degree. Not only does the MS Taxation program qualify, in this regard, but it also provides an exceptional foundation for professional practice, affording a competitive advantage in the workplace. I found both the tax and accounting-related coursework challenging and the instructors engaging and knowledgeable. I feel the professional insights and practical wisdom I received in the program are invaluable." Mark Hughes, Wojeski & Company CPAs, P.C.

"I am a certified public accountant and a certified valuation analyst. Nevertheless, in order to strengthen my foundation as a financial advisor, I pursued an MS in Taxation from the University of Albany. Graduating from SUNY's program helped me attain my objectives. Primarily, it was a pleasure to be instructed by practitioner/professors and interact in a challenging environment. Overall, the MST designation has proven to be very valuable for me." Donald J.
