School of Business Leadership Transition

Professor Hany Shawky is serving as interim dean of the School of Business as former dean Donald Siegel has stepped down to work on grants, his scholarship and a new book contract from Stanford University Press on student entrepreneurship. Following a year’s sabbatical, Dr. Siegel will return to the Department of Management, where he holds the rank of full professor.

Dr. Shawky has held the post of associate dean since 2012. His appointment will allow for greater continuity as the School of Business moves forward. Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost James Stellar said, “An accomplished administrator in his own right, Dr. Shawky is also a prolific author and researcher, and has been a true citizen of the University at Albany for 38 years as a mentor to students and contributor to campus-wide governance.”

Provost Stellar said, “The School of Business is critical to our university-wide success. We will be conducting a national search for a new dean, seeking someone of the highest caliber.”

Shawky, a specialist in investment management and portfolio performance evaluation, has published more than 60 refereed scholarly articles in finance and economics journals and was the recipient of the School of Business Research Award in 1996, 2001 and 2004. He serves on a number of advisory boards and the boards of trustees of small cap and mid-cap equity mutual funds. He has also been a consultant to many private and public organizations. At UAlbany, he has served on several dissertation committees, been a conference organizer for major financial market symposia, and founded the Center for Institutional Investment Management, serving as its director from 2002 through 2007. Shawky will serve as interim dean until a new School of Business dean has been hired.
