Helping Their Communities
Preparing to be Professionals

It started with the Zeta Psi chapter of Delta Sigma Pi who celebrates their 45th anniversary on campus this spring (see story on page 2). They were the only School of Business club until the 1980’s which ushered in Beta Alpha Psi, Pi Sigma Epsilon and the American Marketing Association. Now there are 12 undergraduate clubs, most of which were established in the past 10 years, including a consortium of the leadership of School of Business groups: the Dean’s Leadership Council, created in 2006.

As if juggling jobs and internships with a course load including intense classes like Financial Accounting, Applied Statistics, Corporate Finance, and Systems Analysis and Design isn’t enough, students want to spend time with each other. School of Business clubs provide students with the opportunity to socialize, network, contribute to community service projects and prepare for their eventual careers.

Thanks in part to the Dean’s Leadership Council, School of Business clubs collaborate. Soon after students returned to campus in January, the DLC held the first School of Business Club Fair, showcasing all of the student groups in the School of Business, advertised as “Block party meets School of Business job fair.”

Improving Lives and Communities

Students in School of Business clubs learn to give back to their communities. Last year, they raised over $12,600 for charity. They donate their time, too.

Last fall, over 100 students from a variety of School of Business groups attended the DLC Bowl-A-Thon raising $1,462 for Junior Achievement. Here are some of the organizations that recently benefitted from the efforts of School of Business clubs:

This spring, besides hosting numerous events on their own, most School of Business groups will send a team to Relay for Life, the annual university-wide fundraiser supporting the American Cancer Society. Albany Business Leaders Emerging will organize a 5k running race to support Koinonia Primary Care, a free medical clinic in the West Hill neighborhood of Albany that is the work of UAlbany alumnus Dr. Robert Paeglow ’76. Pi Sigma Epsilon will sponsor St. Jude’s Send a Letter-Save a Life, their biggest event.

Compounding Interest
Students can “do good” while working alone, but working together they have a much stronger impact. If you consider that School of Business club membership this spring totals 738. If every student in every club volunteers one hour this semester (and most volunteer much more), the result is 4+ months of fulltime volunteer work donated to charities and deserving local organizations. That’s a significant contribution to the community.

Developing Careers
Beyond providing opportunities for community service, student groups prepare their membership for the real world. They work with Assistant Dean John Levato and Director of Career Services Deirdre Sweeney, and partner with successful organizations to offer programs to guide their members into fruitful careers.

It starts with “Pick Your Path,” sponsored by the Dean’s Leadership Council. At the 2nd annual event last fall 140 students learned about concentrations of study within the School of Business. DLC President Katy Muller ’13 said, “We got rave reviews from both student and staff attendees, and it has proved to be our most successful event thus far.”
