Department of Biological Sciences
Biological Sciences is one of the fastest growing areas of human knowledge and technology. This growth impacts on many areas from basic knowledge of biological systems to practical applications in medicine, the environment, forensic science, human behavior, and many other areas. The teaching and research within the Department of Biological Sciences covers a broad spectrum of interests yet find common grounds in the shared technology, use of model organisms, and a focus on the fundamental principles that govern biological systems.

Faculty Positions Available
The Departments of Chemistry and Biology in conjunction with the RNA Institute are seeking candidates for four faculty positions: a Chemist/ Biochemist, a Bio Informaticist or Macromolecular X-Ray Crystallographer, an RNA Virologist and a Cell/ Developmental Biologist. -
Grants to study salivary gland development and function
Dr. Melinda Larsen was awarded two grants to investigate salivary gland development. One grant from the Sjögren's foundation is directed at the hypothesis that Rac1 signaling is disrupted in Sjögren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease resulting in dry mouth, dry eye, and other symptoms. The second grant from the National Institute of Health continues work with CNSE and GE on the "Effect of Extracellular Scaffold Elasticity and Binding Site Density on Salivary Acinar Cell Differentiation".
Scholarship Available
- The Katherine Vario Scholarship is awarded each year to a to a woman undergraduate requiring at least one more year of studies at the University at Albany with orientation toward a career in dentistry, medicine, or medical sciences. It was established to honor the memory of Katherine Vario, a biology major and premedical student on the SUNYA campus. [more]
