Applications: Biotechnology and Antimicrobials

“It is a profound and necessary truth that the deep things in science are not found because they are useful; they are found because it was possible to
find them.”  — Robert Oppenheimer

Inteins are nature’s gift to protein chemists, molecular biologists and chemical engineers alike!

REDOX Lock and Key

As such, they are able to make and break peptide bonds. This ability is broadly utilized by protein chemists and chemical engineers, for applications as diverse as protein purification, peptide conjugation and biosensor development.

We study:

  • Intein Inhibitor

Intein biosensor development to monitor pH, oxidative stress and environmental contaminants.

  • The development of inteins as drug targets for control of such infectious diseases as tuberculosis and fungal mycoses.

In our applied work we collaborate with the Georges Belfort Lab, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
