Benefits of Applied Learning

Applied learning is hands on learning. Through participating in applied learning experiences while at the University at Albany, students have the opportunity to grow intellectually, personally and professionally. Applied learning opportunities are available for students in all undergraduate and graduate programs.

There are many benefits for students, including the following:

  • Developing a greater understanding of class material and complex concepts
  • Increasing problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills
  • Reducing stereotypes and gaining greater inter-cultural understanding
  • Improving social responsibility and citizenship skill
  • Career development and networking
  • Testing out a professional environment through applying what they have learned in the classroom in an external context
  • Stronger relationships with faculty
  • Increased research skills for undergraduates, preparing students for graduate education

To me, experiential education on top of a fine classical academic curriculum is a very natural way to inspire students to see where their studies are going and to prepare them for success after graduation whether it is a job and/or further education.  I often say that higher education done this way is like rowing the boat with both oars. ~ Provost Dr. James Stellar
