Special Programs & Field School Opportunities
Anthropology is famous for offering intrepid students a challenge and a taste of the exotic through research opportunities among other cultures and in remote locales near and far. If you are anxious to get your anthropological feet wet in the field, opportunities to gather expertise in these actual research settings abound. Programs in archaeological, bio-anthropological, and ethnological fieldwork are available, with the Northeast and Mesoamerica being the most frequent locations. The archaeology program provides intensive training and/or research opportunities through research programs in the Mohawk Valley, Nicaragua, Belize, and Mexico. Laboratory research experience, both in formal courses and as independent projects, is available in archaeology and biological anthropology. Current UAlbany Anthropology opportunities are the following:
If interested in these summer field research opportunities or any of the many others offered through other institutions (visit the AAA field school webpage for a listing of some of these), it is important to begin looking early in the spring semester. Application deadlines range from mid-March to early May. It is advisable to ask for references well in advance of these deadlines.
