The interdisciplinary major with a concentration in Human Biology aspires to provide undergraduates with a world-class education in the interdisciplinary study of the biology of our species. Human Biology integrates the natural and social sciences to provide students with a unique perspective on the interrelationships between biology and culture. Human Biology relates biocultural variability to health, disease, aging, growth and development, evolution, population biology, ecology, genetics, and the social issues derived from these subjects. This faculty-initiated, student-centered major is supported by a faculty known for both research and teaching excellence, and is well suited for students planning to enter medical, public health, allied health, biotechnology, or academic fields.

Human Biology is an excellent major for students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, health, biotechnology, and academia, or for students who are simply interested in the science of humans. Although there is a prescribed curriculum of courses for the human biology major, many pre-health/pre-med courses also fulfill major requirements. Organic chemistry, for instance, is not required for the major but can be taken as an elective. If you have questions, please contact either of the Human Biology Co-directors, Dr. Helmut Hirsch (hirsch@albany.edu) and Dr. David Strait (dstrait@albany.edu).
