Welcome to the Department of Anthropology. Our department is a four-field department focusing on archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics. We offer undergraduate degrees in Anthropology, Linguistics, and Human Biology as well as graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in Anthropology. Our faculty members are internationally recognized scholars and educators.

Rosenswig wins NSF Grant to support archaeological fieldwork in Mexico
Dr. Rosenswig recently won a $290,000 grant to survey the Soconusco region of Mexico using sophisticated aerial LIDAR to detect previously unknown sites.

NIH Grant Bolsters UAlbany Center's Efforts to Reduce Minority Health Disparities in New York State
The new grant will bolster the Center's research to improve access to health screening and quality health care for underrepresented groups.

Broadwell wins IARPA grant
Dr. Aaron Broadwell, with a UAlbany multidisciplinary research team, will develop a computer-based automated program to identify and interpret language metaphors as a means of understanding culture. The 60-month Robust Extraction of Metaphors in Novel Data (REMND) project is supported by a $5.5-million funding award from the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), the research arm of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
