Dominick Dimino, Kimberly Sheeran, Tiffanie Perea and Jonathan Loncle are the McGovern Scholars for 2008-09.
All four are from Staten Island, N.Y. Dimino, a junior accounting major who plans go on for his Master's degree in accounting, and Sheeran, a senior majoring in business and marketing, are previous recipients of the McGovern Scholarship. Perea, a graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island, and Loncle, a graduate of St. Peter's Boys High School there, are freshmen and have not yet declared majors.
Staten Island was also the hometown of UAlbany graduate Scott McGovern. Following his death in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, McGovern's wife, Jill; a number of their friends; and many of his former classmates established the Scott M. McGovern '87 Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory. Each September, they sponsor the Scott McGovern Memorial Golf Tournament in Long Island to raise funds for the endowment, and for other charitable causes in his name.
The McGovern Scholarship is renewable each year, provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing with a minimum grade point average of 3.1.
