Special Escort – Prof. Ray Bromley
Ray Bromley is a professor of geography and planning at UAlbany, and specializes in community development, international development, and the history of ideas in urbanism and planning.  Born and educated in Britain, and a member of the UAlbany faculty since 1985, he is a fluent Spanish speaker and has worked for nine years on research and technical assistance projects in Latin America. His projects  examine how cities are planned and grow. His consulting clients have included the World Bank, United Nations and even New York City. As UAlbany’s vice provost for international education, he oversees the Study Abroad programs in Madrid, Valencia and Santiago de Compostela. On this tour, he and Carlos Vela, a specialist in Spanish art history and literature who directs the UAlbany program at the International Institute in Madrid will offer unique access to the galleries  and palaces of Andalusia.  We will learn how multigenerational  and multicultural issues of merging new growth and public space make entire new cities possible and how to integrate existing buildings, residents and businesses over thousands of years as these cities flourished.

DETAILED DAILY ITINERARY
 
May 25 – Depart US on overnight flight to Madrid with meals / amenities aloft.

May 26 – We connect for onward flight to Granada. After customs, meet our guide and transfer to hotel. The afternoon is yours to stroll the charming old city. Join your travel companions for dinner. (D)

May 27 – Wonders of sightseeing begin at the Alhambra (translation “The Red One”), a portal to the world of Arabian Nights. Spain’s best preserved and celebrated structure, this 14th century fort and palace includes marble columns, soaring arches and brilliant mosaics under stunning fountains. We also explore the Generalife Gardens surrounding the Alhambra.  The balance of the day is free for independent exploration. (B)

May 28 – En route to Cordoba, we stop to sample fine local olive oils and wines. Then, a UNESCO World Heritage Historical Site at the 8th Century Aljama Mosque - combining elements of Islamic, Baroque and Gothic architecture. Walk the narrow lanes. Stop for tapas at lunch then we continue on to Seville. (B/L/D)

May 29 – Seville’s cathedral is considered the world’s largest Gothic edifice. Stop for a photo at the famous Giralda Tower. Then, wander the medieval passageways of the old Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz and Triana. The afternoon is yours. (B).

May 30 – The morning is free to revisit your favorite sites in Seville.  Later, we transfer to the train station and board the AVE, a comfortable high-speed train for a 340-mile trip to Madrid – it will take less than three hours. On arrival, we transfer to our hotel, passing many famous monuments. After a brief orientation, join your travel companions for dinner. (B/D)

May 31 – Madrid’s Royal Palace is followed by The Prado Museum, repository of some of the finest art in the world. Our specially arranged tour will emphasize the contribution of the Spanish masters like Goya, Velasquez and Dali. Afterward the day is yours to see more at the Prado or at The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, a formerly private collection, encompassing thousands of 20th century Impressionists and Expressionists. (B)

June 1 – A day trip starts at The Escorial, a stunning collection of palaces and monasteries. Afterwards, marvel at “The Valley of the Fallen” an incredible monument to the deaths and suffering of the Spanish Civil War, and burial site of Gen. Francisco Franco. We drive to Toledo, stopping for a wine tasting and lunch. Spain’s first capital and legendary for its armor, swords and metal-working, Toledo was home to El Greco. Wander his town and see his famous “Death of the Count of Orgaz.” Later, return to Madrid. (B/L/D)

June 2 – Enjoy a day at leisure to see more of Madrid.  Re-admission to The Prado has been arranged. Nearby are the Thyssens and Reina Sofia Museums – by now you know why this is called “the golden triangle of art.” Find a new favorite tapas bar for lunch and simply relax in this cosmopolitan city. Tonight, join your travel companions for a “Farewell Dinner” complete with flamenco music and dance. (B/D)

June 3 – After breakfast, transfer to the airport for return flight. (B)
