Donald J. Sayles 1948
Donald Sayles served in the US Army for 35 months during World War II. He was drafted at the age of 19 in 1942, in one of the first groups to be drafted after Congress lowered the draft age from 21 to 18.
He spent the majority of his time in the service overseas, participating in the occupation of Naples and then Rome after the cities were liberated from the Germans. This photograph, with Sayles on the left, was taken in Naples in October 1943, soon after the city's liberation.
Sayles was discharged and returned to the US in December 1945. He attended State College as a commuter and graduated in 1948.
