Karl Gerstenberger was drafted into the Army in December 1954. He received his basic training at Fort Riley, KS with G Company of the 86th Infantry Regiment, 10th Infantry Division. In July 1955, the 86th Infantry Regiment was moved to Schweinfurt, Germany to replace another division. In Germany, Gerstenberger acted as interpreter and chauffer for the 86th regimental Commander, and decided to stay an additional year as active reserve. He left the Army in December 1957, and entered SUNY Albany the following fall, using his benefits under the GI Bill. He graduated from the University in 1962 and received an MA in 1966.
