Graham H. Duncan 1947

Graham Duncan, class of 1947, writes

Counting the Dead
At the end of each day
you look around
to see who's missing
and say I'm still here,
knowing it might come tomorrow
or the day after
and will surely come
before the month is out.
that settled,
you can forget the count
and get back to work.
you help to gather
the bodies,
the grenades and rifles
and hope,
when your turn comes,
someone will do the same
for you.
and if your boots
are still good
that someone who needs them
will notice.
