Herbert S. Bailey 1936, 1947
Herbert S. Bailey, class of 1936, was teaching math and science when the US entered World War II. He joined the Navy and, after completing Naval Training School, was assigned as communications officer to the USS Naos in July 1943.
The Naos was a combination troop transport and cargo ship, and spent the war carrying troops and supplies throughout the South Pacific. Bailey remained on the Naos thoughout the war, until November 1945, and was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant.
He remained in the Navy Reserve after his discharge, serving as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Officers School from 1953 to 1958. His work at the school continued until his retirement from the Navy as Commander USNR in 1974.
