Richard B. Backlund 1957
Richard entered UAlbany in the fall of 1950 as a freshman (class of ’54). He completed his freshman year and was halfway through his first semester as a sophomore when he was called to active duty in the Naval Reserve as part of the military buildup due to the conflict in Korea. He finished the first semester as a sophomore and left for boot camp training in Bainbridge, Maryland on February 5, 1952. After Boot camp, he was assigned briefly to the U.S. Yosemite, Flag ship for the Atlantic coast destroyer fleet, which was based in Newport, Rhode Island. He was reassigned to radio school in Newport. After radio school, he was assigned to the destroyer U.S. Hale until his release in December 1953 from active duty. He married Jean Yeomans while in the service. After release from active duty, he worked for a diary company for a short time. With the knowledge that he was eligible for educational benefits from the G.I. bill, he decided to reenter UAlbany in July 1954. He graduated in January 1957 with a bachelor’s of science degree in Commerce.
