Earl Roger Snow Jr. was originally a member of the class of 1944 at Albany State College for Teachers, where he was involved in many student choral groups as well as the student orchestra. He interrupted his college education to join the Army Specialized Training Program, and was inducted on July 15, 1943.

During training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he continued to organized musical groups, including the 5th Training Regiment Glee Club. He served in the Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns as a member of the 35th Infantry Division Band. The band was used for guard duty during the Battle of the Bulge. Since he knew both French and German, Snow also served as a translator in questioning witnesses and obtaining billets for the division. For this assistance, he received a Certificate of Merit.

Two days after the end of the war in Europe, he was wounded and spent more than a year at an Army hospital. He was discharged on July 15, 1946, and returned to State the following fall. He received his BA in 1947 and an MA in 1948.
