Edith S. Donahue graduated from the New York State College for Teachers in 1936. She enlisted in the US Navy in December 1943, and was commissioned as an ensign on March 7, 1944. By the time she returned to civilian life on September 24, 1946, she had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade.
