UAlbany - Albany High School Alliance for Young Talent
Parnters: As neighbors with large campuses alogn Washington and Western Avenues in Albany, New York, Albany High School and the University at Albany form a natural educational corridor. In fall 2005, UAlbany, the City School District of Albany, and Albany High School, created a new strategic partnership to advance this corridor, building on many longstanding relationships.
Alliance Mission: The partnership works to foster student success and college access for all students at Albany High, particularly those at risk of not graduating because of barriers to education. AHS, the Capital Region's only public high school, has a student body of over 2,800.
Core Alliance programs include Tutoring, Mentoring, Campus Visits, and an annual Teacher Together. Goals are to spark interest in college and career as well as help students improve their academic performance, social development, and personal growth. (Click here for more detail.)
As the "university next door" with over 17,600 students, UAlbany opens a new world of possibilities to high school students. This university-school collaboration is the type of education partnership that state policy makers have recognized as important for closing the achievement gap among disadvantaged populations.
Learning Center Tutoring Program: Started October 2006, this after-school tutoring program is open to all students at Albany high, providing on-site assistance four days a week, about 2 hours daily to students seeking to improve their school work in key fields. As students succeed through tutoring, they also gain in confidence and motivation.
Currently we are trying to have UAlbany students aid the High school students with subjects that will prepare them for the NYS Regents examinations. These subjects include History, Math, Science, and Language Arts(English), however any student who wishes to be a tutor and is not majoring in these fields may still do so.
This is an excellent opportunity to see if the educational field is something you may wish to pursue, whether it be as a teacher, counselor, or administrator this program will allow students to learn through tutoring. This can also be taken for college credit as EDU390 a community service project in which 105 hours of service equates to 3 credits, work study is also a viable option for students who wish to be a part of this project as tutors. Students are also encouraged to volunteer their time as it will serve as invaluable experience to place on one’s resume.
