Learning English in School and Out: The Influence of Setting and Social Class
The Spencer Foundation recently supported a set of modest exploratory case studies of language use in school and neighborhood settings in which Hispanic children from different class backgrounds encounter English. Using ethnographic and sociolinguistic methods Professor James Collins identified and described class-associated neighborhood and school settings and analyzed the dynamics of language contact and language learning within those settings. Findings can aid immigrant language policy and language teaching in better identifying those populations who may have the most difficulty acquiring fluent English.
