This National Science Foundation-supported Local
Systemic Change Initiative provided professional development for K-8 science teachers in six school districts of New York’s Capital Region. Its primary focus is Assessment in the Service of Standards-Based Science Teaching. In addition to ongoing professional learning opportunities in which science teachers became mentors to their
colleagues, the project developed materials to be
shared with others and also examined the effects of high-stakes testing on science teaching and learning in the participating districts.
