are UAlbany Africana Graduates Now? Graduates from the University at Albany's Africana Studies program now serve as University professors, foreign officers, lawyers, doctors, ministers, state and federal workers, librarians, and the like. Below are the bios of some selected Africana Studies Alumni: Joseph Bowman, Ph.D. - Dr. Bowman is an assistant professor in the University at Albany School of Education. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Africana Studies and Sociology from UAlbany and is one of the original students who helped in the formation of the Africana Studies Department. The New York State Legislature appointed Dr. Bowman to the Board of Regents in March, 2001. Johannes J. Brondum - Class of 2000 is a Foreign Area Officer in West Africa. His work involves conducting research in African history, culture and politics; observing economic development projects; and participating in AIDS prevention and treatment programs. J. J. firmly believes that his experience as a graduate student in the Africana Department raised his awareness of the complexities of African cultures and socio-political situations that challenge the stability of African regions. Tshaka Lafayette, Esq. - Tshaka was an Africana Studies and English major both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Upon completion of his Master's degree, Tshaka attended Temple University School of Law and graduated as its Valedictorian in 2000. He has since opened his own law practice in Philadelphia, PA. Risa Fausette, Ph.D. - Dr. Fausette received her Master's from the Department of Africana Studies in 1990 and completed her doctoral studies at the University Center in Binghamton. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the College of St. Rose in Albany and an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Africana Studies. Neil King - Class of 1993 graduated with a Master's degree in Africana Studies and went on to receive a second Master's at the School of International Relations at the University of California. He is now an Analyst at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. Charles Touhey - Class of 1992 is President and CEO of Omega Homes in Albany, New York. Charles' organization provides low income housing. He is also an adjunct professor of African- American Literature in the Department of Africana Studies. Richard Acheampong - Richard received the undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in Africana Studies. He teaches third and fourth grades and loves it. Richard encourages more Black men to be role models at the elementary school level. D. Ekow King - Received the undergraduate degree in Africana Studies in 1990 and the Master's in 1995. Upon graduation he was appointed to an administrative position in Residential Life and Housing. In November 2001, he became the Associate Director of Student Activities at the University at Albany. Annelies Verdoolaege - Graduated with the Bachelors in Africana Studies in 1995. She was a foreign exchange student from Belgium. As a linguistics major from the University of Ghent, she became more interested in Africana Studies, traveling through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Annelies graduated from the Master's program in Africana Studies in 2001 and returned to Europe to work on her doctoral degree. Motoko Tajima - Graduated from the program in 2001. A foreign student from Japan, Motoko had a passionate interest in Africana Studies. Upon completion of the Master's degree, she was accepted into the University at Albany's Humanistic Studies Program and is working towards a doctoral degree. Kevin Hayden - Completed the Master's program in 1993 as a nontraditional student with a business background. Kevin is currently Vice President of Sales at Pepsi Corporation in Michigan, and involved in a joint entrepreneurial venture with Tshaka Lafayette in Ghana, West Africa. >>>
