Grassroots Empowerment for Self Reliance (GEMS) Project - Sierra Leone The Grassroots Empowerment for Self Reliance (GEMS) Project is a national non-governmental organization formed in 1998 to work with women, children and youths in order to overcome poverty and secure the fundamental apparatus to a decent way of life that hinges on the principle that "basic social needs are basic human rights." The project's mission statement is that the future of Sierra Leoneans lies in their hands and therefore the project plans its intervention strategies in concert with targeted beneficiaries. GEMS' urban and rural development programs cover issues such as human rights with emphasis on women's and children's rights, peacebuilding and psychosocial counseling, health and sanitation, the environment and agriculture. GEMS implemented an HIV/AIDS Orphans Project with funds provided by the SAFA Campaign. SAFA's funds cover the orphans' educational requirements and supplements the children's monthly maintenance with their foster parents. GEMS has also embarked on a fundraising drive in which locally made items such as gara tie-dyed materials, woven scarves and bags made of raffia are sent to members of the SAFA Campaign for sale, and the proceeds are remitted back to Sierra Leone to be used in expanding the project's AIDS program.
