UAlbany Africana Studies Programs Ranked Among the Nation's Top 10

The University at Albany's Africana Studies programs are ranked among the Top 10 degree producers in America.

Each year Black Issues in Higher Education produces a listing of the Top 100 degree producers based on analyses of the U.S. Department of Education reports of data submitted by institutions.

According to the Top 100 Degree Producers report, the University at Albany's master's program is ranked third in the nation, up from eighth last year. Other schools in the top 10 included Columbia University, Cornell, Indiana University, Ohio State, Yale, and UCLA. The undergraduate Africana Studies program was ranked number six in the nation. (Click here to view the rank listings.)

The University at Albany offers the only independent master's degree granted by an Africana Studies department in the State University of New York higher education system. The Master of Arts in Africana Studies has been offered by the UAlbany Africana Studies Department since the fall of 1972 and undergraduate classes in Africana Studies were first offered in the fall of 1969.

Black Issues in Higher Education looked at the number of graduating students, diversity of the program and quality of faculty. The undergraduate and graduate programs attract a number of ethnically diverse national and international students. Graduates of both programs go on to work in international affairs, politics, law, social welfare, medicine, education, counseling, economic development, fine arts, publishing, and a variety of other fields.
