4. UAlbany Degree Requirements

Departmental Advice to Transfer Students

Mathematics Major

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University at Albany.

There are two separate Math majors to choose between, Math BA and Math BS.  Both degrees require 36 credits in mathematics numbered 110 or higher; the BS also requires six credits in Computer Science.  Both require minors to also be completed; the BS specifies that students choose a minor from a select list. Mathematics 214 (Calculus of Several Variables) and 220 (Linear Algebra) are required for both majors. The BA requires one course in each of four areas; the BS requires two separate sequences which consist of two courses each. There are a number of choices to satisfy these requirements. Click here for more details about choosing which meets your needs.

As a transfer student it is important for you to also use your Degree Audit Report (DARS) to determine what you’ve already completed and what is left for you to finish at Albany. If your DARS does not list the major you have chosen to pursue, please contact the Advisement Services Center to make the correction.  As you review your accurate audit, please consider the following information that we have found to be important to transfer students:

  • A Mathematics major may be declared after you earn a grade of C or higher AMat 113, 119, or 214 (calculus II and multi-variable calculus). Transfer credits may be used to satisfy this requirement.

  • Math majors are advised to follow the sequence of major courses outlined on the Mathematics MAPS, (Math BA MAP and Math BS MAP) particularly in the first three semesters.  Note your starting point based on the math classes you have previously completed.

  • Your DARS will list the upper level requirements, along with the choice of classes to satisfy them.

PrPrerequisites: It is important to know/follow the prerequisites for the courses you willneed to take.  Check course descriptions in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

If you have reached the upper level Math coursework, you may choose to satisfy the upper level writing requirement by selecting a 300+ math class listed with a “Z” suffix.  Several Math “Z” classes are offered each semester.

1. You are advised to complete and submit your Educational Plan as soon as possible, to maximize access to available seats.  The plan does not have to be perfect or final.

2. Your Educational Plan will be reviewed by a member of the Mathematics and Statistics faculty who will contact you by your UA email address with comments or questions.

3. When your proposal is approved, you will receive an email with your AVN (Advisement Verification Number). You can expect to receive this by email within two weeks after receipt of your proposal.  Please be sure to check your UAlbany email account.  Your AVN will give you access to the registration system.

4. You may consult with an advisor during the Transfer Planning Conference (Orientation) and can finalize or make changes to your schedule at that time.
