New Transfer Student Academic Advisement

4. UAlbany Degree Requirements

Departmental Advice to Transfer Students

Biology Major

Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences
University at Albany
www.albany/edu/biology

*PLANNING.  Regardless of where you are in your academic career when you enter the University, the key to completing all degree requirements and graduating in a timely manner is planning.   This is crucial for Transfer Students, as it may take longer than you had anticipated.

*The Bachelor of Science in Biology is a 66 credit, combined major/minor program; no minor is required.

*The Bachelor of Arts in Biology is a 36 credit major that requires a separate minor.  For a list of minors and their requirements, click here.

Sequenced Curriculum

Prerequisites.  Almost all Biology curriculum classes have prerequisites. Students are de-registered from classes for which they do not have the prerequisites.

Course
Prerequisite
Upper level Biology Biochemistry (Bio 365)
Bio 365 Genetics (Bio 212) and Organic Chemistry (Chm 220/222)
Bio 212 General Bio (Bio 110 and 111)
Chm 220/221 General Chemistry (Chm 120/124 and 121/125)

Timing is important – not all classes are offered every semester.  For example:

                  Fall                                                Spring
                  Bio 110                                         Bio 111Z
                  Chm 220/222                               Chm 221/223
                  Phy 105/106                                 Phy 108/109

The MAPs  (Major Academic Pathways) display the order in which the Biology-BS and Biology-BA would be completed in four years.
