Departmental Advice to Transfer Students

Art Major

Department Website
Welcome to the Art department at the University at Albany.

The Studio Art program is dedicated to cultivating students' creative potential, and to inspiring and nurturing developing artists. Studio Art offers two program options: a 36 credit major with a declared minor and a 60 credit major. The underlying philosophy of the undergraduate program begins with the premise that art is central to a liberal arts course of study. In common with students in all the liberal arts, art majors are exposed to sound arguments, have an opportunity to criticize, and present ideas visually and verbally. 36 credit majors develop a solid comprehension of visual principles and acquire basic foundation skills. 60 credit majors choose an area of emphasis and pursue a focused and intense studio practice.   There are five Studio Art areas of concentration: digital media, painting and drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

In planning your academic career at Albany as a transfer student, it is important for you to use your Degree Audit Report (DARS) to determine where you stand in the program. The DARS shows you what you have credit for through courses transferred to Albany and through courses taken at Albany, and it shows what you still need to do to complete your degree. If you have any concerns about how your previous Art coursework has transferred, use the Comments at the end of the Educational Plan to raise these questions with your advisor.

As you plan your program here at Albany, please consider the following points that are relevant to transfer students.

Your degree audit will reflect the 36 credit Art major. Students interested in the 60 credit major submit portfolios to the department for consideration. Please note your interest in the Comments section of the Educational Plan you will submit from this website.

Both degrees require 18 credits in core courses; four studio courses and two introductory Art History surveys (Art 105, 110, 115, 205, ARH 170, 171). In your first semester at UAlbany please plan to take ARH and 1-2 of the studio classes that you have not yet completed.

36 credit Art majors also need to complete a minor unless they have a second major . In your first semester here , you may plan to include 1 class for your minor. For a list of minors and the courses required to complete them click here.

Note any general education requirements you have yet to complete. Round out your schedule by selecting 1-2 as needed.

The MAP (Major Academic Pathway) shows how the Art major might be completed in four years.  You may use this in conjunction with our planning sheets (36 credits, 60 credits) to design your own personal MAP of any remaining requirements you need to meet.

1.      You are advised to complete and submit your Educational Plan as soon as possible, to maximize access to available seats

2.      Your Educational Plan will be reviewed by a member of the Art faculty who will contact you by email with comments or questions.  When your proposal is approved, you will receive your AVN (Advisement Verification Number).  This will allow you access to the registration system to create your fall schedule.
