School of Education

The School of Education's reputation for superior to the educational community has long been recognized regionally and nationally. It is committed to preparing researchers, education policy analysts, and teachers. Its curriculum is designed to provide graduate students with a common language for identifying, defining, and solving educational problems.

Many School of Education programs are offered in cooperation with other schools and departments of the University.

The School of Education is dedicated to the task of preparing secondary school teachers and educational specialists whose extensive liberal and special subject education is supported by thorough instruction in the science of education and in the art of teaching. This is accomplished through close cooperation among all the schools of the University, under graduate and graduate, and through the several agencies, which make teacher education an all University function.

Counseling Psychology, Ph.D., C.A.S., M.S., B.A./M.A., B.A./M.S. Integrated scientist-practitioner training in psychology as a scientific discipline and counseling psychology as an area of specialization is offered. Areas of focus are psychological, social, and vocational aspects of disability and of human development and adjustment and include theoretical and research issues. Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology, M.S. Program concentrations include Instructional Design, Technology and Theory for students who wish to develop scholarly expertise in instructional design, technology, and theory, and who intend to assume leadership roles in matters related to instruction in schools, government agencies, professions, research, or industry; Research and Evaluation in Curriculum and Instruction which prepares students for research and evaluation positions in higher education, school districts, state and federal govern ment agencies, private industry, and private consulting; Language in Education which focuses on research and scholarship in first and second language teaching and learning, including literacy, writing, English, and literature; and Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning for students wishing to develop scholarly expertise in the research, theory, and practice of science and mathematics teaching and learning.

Curriculum & Instruction, Ph.D., C.A S. Faculty research interests include curriculum and pedagogy, learning in the academic disciplines, educational evaluation and assessment, and instructional design and technology.

Educational Administration and Policy Studies, Ed.D., CEILS., M.S. Concentrations are offered in K- 12 school administration, higher education administration, and educational policy studies. The Professional Administrator Option (PAO) is available to experienced professionals in all concentrations in the doctoral program. The Department works extensively with international as well as state, local, and national educational programs and agencies.

Educational Psychology and Statistics, Ph.D., C.A S. in Educational Research, M.S. Concentrations are available in learning: instruction, development, measurement, applied statistics, evaluation, special education, and school learning in mathematics, science, or foreign language education; educational psychology and statistics; and educational research. General Educational Studies, M.S. This program complements a variety of undergraduate preparations and is appropriate for people with a general interest in education.

Reading, Ph.D., C.A.S., M.S. Areas of program specialization are literacy and society, literacy and school, and the nature and acquisition of literacy. Current emphases include studies in the areas of literacy research and development: state and federal literacy policies: psycholinguistics: clinical diagnosis and remediation: administration and evaluation of literacy programs (potential for NYS SAS certification): literacy and language differences: and classroom process research. The M.S. program offers two tracks: Classroom Literacy Instruction and Reading Teacher. The latter program leads to NYS certification as a reading teacher K- 12.

School Psychology, Psy.D., C.A S. The program emphasizes leadership in applying the principles of psychology, developmental psychology, and educational psychology to the practice of education. Special Education, M.S. Certification Emphasis is placed on developing special teaching competencies for work with children who have special needs. A 46-week, full day teaching internship, intensively supervised, is featured in this program. Permanent New York teaching certification is obtained upon successful completion of the program and two years of full-time special education teaching.

Teaching Secondary School Academic Subjects - Provisional Certification Program, M.A., M.S. The Graduate Provisional Certification Program satisfies the course work and field requirements for New York State Provisional Certification to teach secondary school academic subjects in middle and high school. Academic subjects for specialization are: English, Foreign Languages (including Latin), Mathematics, Social Studies, and the natural sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science).

Teaching Secondary School Academic Subjects - Permanent Certification Program, M.A.,* M.S.* The Permanent Certification Program satisfies the course work requirements for New York State Permanent Certification to teach academic subjects in middle and high school. Academic subjects for specialization are: English, Foreign Languages (including Latin), Mathematics, Social Studies, and the natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science).

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), M.S., M.S. Certification* The TESOL master's program is designed to meet the educational and career goals of students in the field of teaching of English to speakers of other languages. Students come to the program with a variety of goals. Some wish to teach English as a second language to young children in bilingual education programs in U.S. schools, while some wish to teach at either the high school or adult level. Others wish to teach English as a Foreign Language in a variety of situations overseas. To meet the varying needs of these students, the program provides interdisciplinary study in several areas of education, anthropology, linguistics, and English. It also offers opportunities for independent study and field experience in TESOL programs. There are two tracks in the TESOL Master's program. Both tracks lead to the master's degree, but only one leads to New York Certiflcation in TESOL.
