Established in honor of William D. Powers, a former Marine sergeant who served five years active duty in the U.S. Marine Corp, The Marine Sergeant William D. Powers Scholarship provides support for enlisted or honorably discharged Marines pursuing a degree at the University at Albany. Marine Corps Coordinating Council Treasurer John Curry, Executive Director David Wallingford and Marine Sergeant William D Powers presented the gift of $75,000 to President George M. Philip on behalf of the Marine Corp Coordinating Council of the New York Capital Region.
"I understand the many challenges our Marines face and I know that education is one of the best ways for them to advance in life," said former Sergeant Powers. "Between the training they receive in the USMC and the education from the University at Albany I am sure our young scholar Marines will go far. This scholarship will help ensure that."
