The Little Magazine
Innovation, and Tradition
The journal was founded in the late 1950s as The Quest by David Hartwell, now a senior editor at Tor Books. The title, we believe, referred to W.H. Auden's essay on Tolkien, "The Quest Hero." Later Hartwell changed the name to The Little Magazine, a name, to the current editors, reminiscent of The Little Review, which was an important avenue of innovation in early modernism. When Hartwell's commitments as a fantasy and science fiction editor became too time-consuming, he generously handed it on to Judith Johnson at 13th Moon Press.

The first few volumes after this transfer were print journals edited by Ron MacLean and Jan Ramjerdi, with Eugene Garber acting as editorial advisor. On Garber's retirement, Don Byrd took over as editorial advisor. He transformed it into a digital journal, publishing two volumes as multimedia cd-roms, and maintaining an e-journal website for other volumes.
The Little Magazine's current mission is to revive and further develop the ferment and experimentation that characterized the 1960s and 70s as well as the early days of modernism, which was diluted by the mid-century's "New Critics" into a state of dull conformity. Areas currently inviting bold innovation are multimedia digital poetry and fiction, cybertext graphics, and language art. Please check our Subscriptionspage for information on future and back issues.
