Volume 19

Featured Artist: Vivien Ng

Excerpt from "Redemption"

“What’s the matter? Are you feeling nauseous from the treatment? Maybe we should have stayed home one more day before taking this trip?” Sandy asked when she saw Rachel clutch her throat with her left hand. They were standing in front of “Pot of Geraniums,” Rachel’s favorite painting by Henri Matisse. It became her favorite many years ago when she was standing on the same spot, at the National Gallery of Art, looking at the painting but with her mind being miles away.
“What do you call them in your native tongue?” asked a middle-aged woman who had been like her satellite all afternoon, pausing synchronously at the same paintings.
Rachel spun around and replied with some annoyance in her voice, “Oh, we call them ‘geraniums’.”
