The goal of this pathfinder is to provide the best sources that would show people how to successfully grow rhododendrons with the correct tools and with the proper environment and landscape. The pathfinder is intended for the general public with limited knowledge of rhododendrons and their growing needs. The author recently acquired rhododendrons in the landscaping and intends to continue learning more about their beauty and requirements so they may flourish with care.
If it is found the scope of research is too narrow on rhododendrons, offered is research that is expanded to include flowering shrubs in its resources. Many of the resouces found in this pathfinder contain information regarding flowering shrubs and within that category, rhododendrons and their many varieties may be found. Information is readily available in encyclopedias, and that will give us a point in which to launch our introduction to rhododendrons.
Print resources included in the pathfinder are cataloged in the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) which can be accessed via the Adriance Memorial Library website link, which is part of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District.
Resources may be located in any library participating in the Mid-Hudson Library System and can be obtained via interlibrary loan when an item is not located in your local public library. Reference materials (non-circulating) must be obtained by going to the specific library that owns the title you are interested in. The location and a call number are provided for circulating and non-circulating materials. Included also are the list prices of books where the infomation was obtained, and if the book was out of print or hard to find, the used book price was included. EBSCO and InfoTrac: Library Patrons have access to the Mid-Hidson Library System's databases, both in the library and at home. When visiting the Adriance library's home page, Adriance patrons should go to Reference Services, and click on Online Databases and enter their library card bar code. Library patrons who's library is associated with the Mid-Hudson Library System should visit their local library's web site and visit HomeAccess and they may use their library card for access by entering the bar code on the back of the library card. This allows patrons to gain access to the databases offered, such as EBSCO MasterFile Select for full-text magazines and general reference, popular, business, and health. and flags, and Consumer Reports. Also a valuable tool for research is InfoTrac Custom Newspapers which contains full text of 150 newspapers, including nine newspapers from NY State, and the latest 365 days of the New York Times. Use the National Newspaper Index to search America's top 5 newspapers in one search (The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post)
The public library system's databases contain information geared toward the general population discussing the care and pruning of rhododendrons in the landscape of one's yard. The two databases most helpful are EBSCO and InfoTrac. Some articles are citations, while others offer full text. The scope of InfoTrac Custom Newspapers offers information from a variety of "more than one hundred sixty newspapers" and "Knight-Ridder Tribune News Service and Business News Wire services provid[es] an average of 650 articles per day from more than 165 sources." (Info obtained from EBSCO, accessed 3/21/04)
In the scope covered in EBSCO, the company is considered a "worldwide leader in providing information access and management solutions through print and electronic journal subscription services, research database development and production, online access to more than 100 databases and thousands of e-journals, and e-commerce book procurement" (Info obtained from EBSCO, accessed 3/21/04).
The EBSCO database contains the best information, and InfoTrac Custom Newspapers could also be used by a member of the library population searching for information on rhododendrons. As authority sources, EBSCO Publishing and Gale Group's InfoTrac are "major publishers of general periodical indexes" and they are "intended for…public libraries" (Bopp, Richard E.; Linda C. Smith, eds. Reference and Information Services, An Introduction, Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited. Third ed., Ch. 20, p. 516.) Both data bases are arranged chronologically, with the most recent information first in the list of retrieved hits. <
