RESEARCH

My research has focused on the spatial and demographic analysis of behavioral and urban phenomena.  I am interested in micro-level decision-making in migration/mobility and housing consumption, macro-level dynamics in neighborhood change and urban socio-spatial restructuring, and the interactions between them.  I also have a regional focus on China, where profound socioeconomic and spatial transformations are taking place.  I am interested in understanding the unprecedented market transition and its impact on Chinese people and places.  In particular, I am interested in migration and housing consumption as responses to new opportunities brought about by the reform.  My research contributes to three bodies of literature: housing and neighborhood change, migration and urbanization, market transition and China.
