Macro Reading Group
Fall 2007
The macro reading group has two goals: (1) to discuss interesting research; and (2) to help students strengthen their skills in presentation and dialogue.
Each week, a student will spend 20-30 minutes (if uninterrupted) describing a paper. This presentation will be the starting point for open-ended discussion.
Faculty will attend and contribute; however, students are expected to do most of the talking.
Papers must be approved by the presenters' advisors.
Presenters should keep their talks as short and non-technical as possible. Presenters should try to convey three things: (1) the main results; (2) a brief, intuitive description of the paper's mechanics; and (3) the paper's contribution to the literature.
Use LaTeX presentations: these are the industry standard. With the "Beamer" package in Scientific Workplace, LaTeX presentations are easy.
Monika Piazzesi provides some useful tips for presenting.
Non-presenters should try to read at least the abstract, introduction and conclusion.
Respect your classmates: please try to attend all presentations.
