Transportation and Health

Did you Know???

The data indicates that more
than 70% of NY State adults
do not meet the recommended
levels of physical activity

Over 50% of the State's
adults are overweight or
obese.

Inactivity costs $3 billion
in New York State

A 5% increase in physical
activity rates would save
NY taxpayers $150 million

Welcome!

The Initiative for Healthy Infrastructure (iHi) is a project of the State University of New York at Albany designed to help communities create physical environments that support healthy, active lifestyles. ‘Healthy Infrastructure’ is a new way of describing the connection between facilities for walking, bicycling and physical fitness as an integrated part of transportation, recreation and community quality of life. The initiative includes teaching, research, policy development, public outreach and planning in a cross-disciplinary approach. Specific efforts in the iHi program include developing county-level Healthy Infrastructure Plans, establishing a Resource Center to provide technical support, and hosting a biennial Healthy Infrastructure Conference.

News Release! UAlbany's Purple Path Fosters Neighborhood, Campus Activity Updated 10/30/07!

Purple Path in Times Union: New path to exercise Updated 10/29/07!
"If students want to procrastinate away from their computer screens, they'll soon have a new place to do it: The Purple Path. The trail, now being built, is another project on a campus quaking with construction. A graduate studio with the Department of Geography and Planning came up with the concept. The first section will offer walkers a 9-foot-wide, blacktop-paved path and runners a 6-foot-wide path with crushed stone. A grassy area will divide the two-lane trail. The section, one-third of a mile long, will stretch from the corner of the baseball field to the entrance of the SEFCU Arena parking lot. That part should be done by December. The goal is to eventually replace the patchwork of pavement, sidewalks and dirt areas that now ring the campus. "Our campus is a popular place for our neighbors, faculty, staff and students to run and walk, and this new path will make UAlbany an even more inviting place for these activities," Officer in Charge and Provost Susan Herbst said in a statement." ~ Times Union - By MARC PARRY

A new law will take effect November 1, 2006 directed at drivers involved in a crash resulting in serious injury or death of a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorcyclist that could result in the suspension or revocation of their driver's license. This law targets some of the issue which Ryan's Law addresses and can serve as an initial step to further protect Pedestrians and Bicyclists!
